Zenit might not be a household name, but walk the pump pits under Sydney's apartment buildings and you'll meet it constantly — Italian-built commercial submersibles, very often installed as a dual duty/standby pair with a control panel running the alternation. It's solid, serious gear, and it deserves to be looked after like it.
That's the work we do. Scheduled servicing with megger and amp readings on both motors — because a standby pump you haven't tested is just a rumour. Panel diagnostics handled in-house under our Restricted Electrical (Motors) endorsement. Floats, non-return valves and jammed impellers repaired on the day. And a written report after every visit that a strata committee can actually table.
When a motor finally reaches the end — and the megger always says so before the flood does — we give you the numbers and a straight recommendation, with the replacement going onto the existing pit and pipework. Same approach as all our repair work: evidence first, then the fix.

Float switch failure
Strata pits are busy places — chains, cables, two pumps and their floats all sharing the space. Floats foul, snag and stick, and a healthy Zenit ends up doing nothing while the alarm screams. Setting floats to swing genuinely free is half the battle.

The standby that died quietly
The trap with duty/standby pairs: the standby pump can fail months before anyone notices, because the duty pump keeps the building dry. Then the duty pump trips — and there's no backup. We test and rotate both pumps every service so the spare is real, not theoretical.

Control panel faults
Zenit systems almost always run through a duty/standby panel — alternation relays, contactors, alarm circuits. In our experience the panel faults as often as the pumps, and we diagnose pump-side electrical in-house under our Restricted Electrical (Motors) endorsement.

Jammed impellers
Apartment buildings feed their pits a steady diet of wipes and rag, and even a vortex impeller eventually meets the load that locks it. We lift the pump, clear the jam, inspect the impeller and megger the motor while it's on the surface.

Non-return valve failure
Two pumps sharing a discharge means two non-return valves that have to hold. When one leaks back, pumped sewage recirculates and both pumps clock up hours moving the same water. A valve swap is quick, worthwhile work — and a regular find on our strata rounds.

Seal wear and falling insulation
Years of duty cycles wear the mechanical seals, moisture creeps toward the windings, and the megger reading starts its slide. Caught on a service visit, you get time to plan. When a motor is properly wet, the honest path is a replacement on the existing pit — not wishful thinking.

Do you repair Zenit pumps?
We repair what's genuinely worth repairing: floats, non-return valves and jammed impellers, plus the panel and pump-side electrical around the system. If a motor still meggers well, those fixes put it straight back to work. If the insulation reading says moisture has reached the windings, we'll tell you plainly — that's a replacement conversation, not a repair one.
We're a strata building with a Zenit system — what do you provide?

Only one of our two Zenit pumps seems to run — is that a problem?
It's worth checking promptly. It might just be how the alternation relay has landed, but in our experience it often means the standby pump or its float has failed quietly and the duty pump is carrying the whole building alone. One pump doing two pumps' work wears fast — and leaves no backup. A test visit settles it.
Do you install new Zenit pumps?
Yes — Zenit's commercial-grade submersibles are a solid fit for demanding strata and industrial duty, particularly dual duty/standby pits. We size to the building's real inflow and head, and commission pumps, floats, valves and panel as a complete system. If the duty doesn't need commercial-grade gear, we'll recommend whatever genuinely suits it.
